Without a space suit, astronauts couldn't last more than about 15 seconds in the harsh conditions of space!

Astronauts wear a cap with headphones and a microphone so that they can communicate in the vacuum of space.

With no atmosphere to protect you, the Sun's rays can be very strong in space. Astronauts wear a special cooling layer underneath their space suit to stop them getting too hot!

They also have a water supply to keep themselves well hydrated.

New we can start putting on the main suit. It is made of parts that seal together to form a protective barrier. Space suits are white to reflect the sun's rays.

They need boots that protect their feet, but that don't damage their space craft.

Astronauts need special gloves to protect their hands whilst allowing them to work in space.

space suits have life support systems. This delivers oxygen, removes carbon dioxide and maintains a safe temperature inside the suit.

These life support systems are carried in a type of backpack so that astronauts can move around freely in space. They can even use a jetpack to get around out there!

Last but not least, we need a helmet to protect our head, keep in the breathable air and to protect our eyes from the very bright sunshine!

And that's how we keep our brave astronauts alive and well in outer space! Pretty neat huh!
