What Are Peas?

What Are Pease? by Dom Conlon

Any regular reader of my website will know that I love poetry. I love all forms of writing but poetry (and short stories) are my absolute favourites). I love trying out new rhythms or styles with poetry and so I wanted to share one of the terms I enjoy – the kenning.

A kenning is an Anglo-Saxon form of writing and it’s the most simple way to create an image I can think of (whilst being one of the most elegant). All you need to do is describe something in two words. So, a whale might be an ‘ocean balloon’, a squirrel might be a ‘twig walker’, and so on.

Recently I was working and had some fresh peas – straight from the pod. That made me play a game – what are peas? Here’s my list – not all of which I did on my own. The best ones were by friends! If you’d like to join in then add your kennings in the comments below.
