Missing—a cake poem

Missing, by Dom Conlon illustration by Oliver Conlon

My cake has gone missing
Have you seen it at all?
It wasn’t so big,
It wasn’t so small.

It had a red cherry
With chocolate inside.
There was even a hole
Where jam liked to hide.

It was lighter than morning
And softer than song.
We hadn’t been friends
For so very long.

It had sprinkles like raindrops
And icing like dew.
It had cream in the middle –
You’ve not seen it, have you?

It had wafers and ice cream
Like a day at the sea.
And jellies hugged smarties
Unashamed of their glee.

There was pastry on edges,
Like flags in the street.
There were angels of sugar
Like Heaven in sweet.

Have you seen such a cake,
Have you seen it at all?
Did I hear it just now,
Did it cry out and call?

I cared for it deeply,
I miss it so much.
It glowed when I looked
And it sighed at my touch.

My cake has gone missing
It’s gone without trace.
But wait… what is that…
ALL OVER YOUR FACE.
