The Sun’s Late Night

Sun's Late Night by Dom Conlon illustrated by Rob Lenihan

The sun is late back home today,
I see it as I wake.
It creeps around the curtain which
I open with a shake.

I watch it sneak across the grass,
Tip-toeing on the dew.
I wonder where it’s been all night—
What has it seen that’s new?

Has it played out with my cats,
Was it their ball of wool?
And did it lie upon the wall
When all their tums were full?

Perhaps it fished upon the lake,
Its sunbeam rod outstretched.
Perhaps it turned into a fish!
Or is that too far-fetched?

Maybe the sun played hide-and-seek
Along the forest path;
Ducking down behind the leaves
Then leaping out to laugh.

It might, just MIGHT, have flown around
The world and back again.
It may have warmed each land before
Their days began to wane.

But I can’t even say it went
To hang out in the park.
Last night I couldn’t see the sun
Because it was so dark.
