A Domboid—a maths poem

A Domboid, poem by Dom Conlon illustration by Suzanne Henderson

I am that shape we never learned in school,
with all the angles of uncertainty jutting out
as though a child had missed a lesson early on
but kept on drawing nonetheless.
Why not start again, a teacher might have said,
but I kept me hidden, a mess of lines
sagging into an old man’s clothes
sketched foolishly in ballpoint
when confidence was high.

What shape might you be? Do you have a face pointed at the future? Feet flattened by time? Are you rounded like a ball of fun or tall like a curious giraffe?
