The Out of the Blue Zoo

Poem by Dom Conlon Illustration by Jools Wilson
I know what I’d do if I started a zoo,
I’d fill it with Things from Out Of The Blue.
I’d capture some Shocks and a Wild Surprise,
and let them run free beneath thunderbolt skies.
There’d be Zappers and Zingers and mighty Humdingers,
and the stray sort of Thought which persistently lingers.
There’d be Gasps and a Gulp, a Gazook and Gazump,
but I’d keep them away from that Grouchy Old Thump.
I’d bag me a Chance and a huge Happenstance,
then I’d wait and I’d watch for their lumbering dance.
I’d round up Eurekas and excited Squeakers
and I’d catch a whole herd of those sneaky Nose Tweakers.
A Tickle, a Sneeze, a Cool Desert Breeze –
these are the things I’d show off with ease.
There’d be sight after sight of the things which delight,
and I might even cage the most Dangerous Fright.
So to enter my zoo you can pay me right here,
with a single, amazing, astounding idea.
Take some time, take a day, take a whole clock and say,
“I did not expect the Unexpected today.”
But the biggest, the best, the zingiest zest,
is the thing I found once and it beats all the rest.
It’s the thing in the zoo straight Out Of The Blue –
it’s the Moment I Happened To Lay Eyes On You.
