Standing on my own two feet

Poem by Dom Conlon, illustration by Jools Wilson

I remember the day I stopped falling over,
My sapling legs finally strong and the
Winds of change no longer able to unpeg me
From the ground.

I remember the day I stopped falling over,
I was land-locked, my sea wings clipped.
I had Up and Down removed from my compass,
Level was my new playing field.

I remember the day I stopped falling over,
I was in good standing, saw eye-to-eye
With my peers and took a firm line
On playground games.

I remember the day I stopped falling over,
It was the day my first tooth fell out.
