Your breathing slows, your eyes shut tight,
your folks turn off the hallway light,
you hear one thing that’s not quite right,
you wonder where they go at night.
They leave you on your own, you know,
they do this every night.
When you’re asleep they tuck you in
and disappear from sight.
Where do they go, you’d like to know?
You’d like to know just where.
But do you think that now’s the time
To find out if they care?
They leave you on your own, you know,
they do this every night.
When you’re asleep they tuck you in
and disappear from sight.
Perhaps they creep to the Midnight Ball
where demons dance and creatures crawl,
where spiders tower nine feet tall
whilst wizards croak and witches call.
They leave you on your own, you know,
they do this every night.
When you’re asleep they tuck you in
and disappear from sight.
Perhaps they zoom out to the stars
In special, super-fast jet cars.
Perhaps they stop awhile on moons
And leap and jump and dance like loons.
They leave you on your own, you know,
they do this every night.
When you’re asleep they tuck you in
and disappear from sight.
Maybe they searched and even found
A secret chamber underground,
Where cogs and wheels and engines turn,
Where pistons pump and fires burn.
They leave you on your own, you know,
they do this every night.
When you’re asleep they tuck you in
and disappear from sight.
Where might they be this very night
As you sleep without a light?
Did they wander off somewhere
In search of some strange golden bear?
They leave you on your own, you know,
they do this every night.
When you’re asleep they tuck you in
and disappear from sight.
But then again, perhaps, maybe
They’ve travelled out across the sea
To where the moonlit dolphins leap
To have adventures in the Deep.
They leave you on your own, you know,
they do this every night.
When you’re asleep they tuck you in
and disappear from sight.
But truth to tell, in short to say,
The place they go when you’re asleep,
Is far from there and near to where
You lie alone without a peep.
It’s true they leave you on your own,
It’s true they close the bedroom door.
But when they think that you’re out cold
They fall asleep and start to snore.
