How far away is the corner of your eye?
Is it just past the hill where Lollopods lie?
Is it up, it is down, around or abound,
Is it miles from where the Falafulls are found?
Is it under the sun or over the moon,
Or hiding and waiting in just the next room?
Is it dreaming outside in the sun-lit air,
Or snugged in a box with the Utmost Bear?
We’ve seen it before and we’ve seen it below,
I once had it cornered but I was too slow.
And when it escaped as quick as a glance
I knew I’d then lost our one only chance
To learn all it knows and to see all it sees
Of rainbows and sunsets, of tigers and bees.
Of gazes in mazes, and looks over books,
Of running away from pirates with hooks.
On wet days or dry days I still really try
To catch up and snatch up that beautiful eye.
And this time I’ll wrap it in gossamer sighs-
If only I can reach it before our goodbyes.
