Come and look.

He’s just outside.

I found a Dodo trying to hide.

What do you mean, all Dodos are dead?

As a matter of FACT, this one is called Ted.

Come and look.

I said not a murmur. I said not a word.

He must have been startled.

We must have been heard.

Wait there.

I found him.

As you can see

He was chased by a bee.

He had to hide, he had to run off.

And it was quite by chance, that I heard him cough.

Come and look.

This Dodo is quiet.

This Dodo is shy.

But however you shout, he won’t ever fly.

His wings are too tiny, his wings are too small.

If he tried to lift off, he’d tumble and fall.

Come and look.

He’s gone!

But he’s real. I’m not making him up.

He must have gone running when he heard our pet pup.

I hope he’s safe.

I hope he’s ok.

I hope that we find him this very fine day.

Wait here.

Listen.

He would like to meet you but he’s really not sure.

He asked me to ask you, would you crawl on the floor?

Tall things are scary, tall things are loud.

He once hid for a year at the sight of a cloud.

Be quiet.

We’d better go quickly, but we’d better not rush.

He’s sitting so close, over there in the bush.

He said he will wait if you keep your eyes shut.

But if you blink once then he’s not staying put.

Come and look.

I don’t understand. I really don’t see.

He said he would wait, if it was just you and me.

WAIT! I know where he is. I know where he went.

He must have caught wind of your terrible scent.

See, there aren’t many Dodos still out in the wild.

Some say they all died from being too mild.

But the ones that are left must hide very well.

As to where they all go, a Dodo won’t tell.

But I don’t think we’ll see ours.

I think he’s gone shy.

You might not believe me

But I’ll try to say why.

Dodos ran from the lions, they ran from the bears, they ran from the men with guns and hard stares.

They left their forests, they left their trees, they left their sandwiches out for the fleas.

Listen carefully.

But the thing they run most from…

The thing that they fear…

Is something you might just be able to hear.

And that’s why my Dodo ran off today.

And that’s why we should get safely away.

For I think that it saw what bellowed that roar.

And we really can’t wait…
